Creative Light Writer's Guild Play/Script Writing Workshop

Have you ever wanted to write a piece for the stage or screen? This is your opportunity!


This five week workshop will take you through all the steps to make your vision a reality. The goal is to write a short, one-act play, about ten to fifteen minutes in length. At the end of the workshop, we'll host an informal reading to share your work with friends and family. The plays we produce will also be compiled into an anthology, which will be sold on our website, with proceeds to benefit Executive Women's International and their Literacy Programs for children and adults in Metro Detroit.


Workshop Sessions:

Week 1:

What is Dialogue? Dialogue vs Prose. Techniques that Work. Avoiding Too Much Exposition. Proper Formatting.

In Class Assignment: Discussing ideas for a short, fifteen to twenty page, one act play.

Homework: Five to seven pages of a play/script written and properly formatted.


Week 2:

Avoiding "wooden dialogue." Voice and Characterization. Introduction to Work Shops.

Rest of class period will be devoted to work shopping student's work.

Homework: Additional five to seven pages written and properly formatted. Edit and Implement changes based on work shop feedback.


Week 3:

Story Arc. Reiteration of Previous Instruction (Based on Student's Work to this Point)

Rest of class period will be devoted to reading and work shopping the student's written work.

Homework: Finish writing play/script (15 to 20 pages total) to include edits and changes based on work shop feedback. Email instructor completed plays/scripts and he will provide any needed feedback. Implement changes prior to last class


Week 4:

Introduction to Readings. Think Your Play is Finished? Think Again!

Table Reading of completed scripts/plays

Final Feedback



Week 5:

Congratulations! You are now a playwright.An informal performance reading of the work we've produced. Invite your friends and family to share in your creativity!

Light refreshments will be served.

We will take pre-orders for the Play Anthology tonight, and he expected release date is September 15, 2019.
