As a child, I always looked forward to taking field trips with my class at school. It was an excuse to escape the day-to-day drudgery and expand my horizons with new experiences in fun places. I was exposed to different environments that stimulated my enthusiasm for study. I learned new approaches to my work simply because I did that work surrounded by sights, sounds, textures, and aromas of unique spaces. These experiences strengthened my understanding and helped me to develop empathy for my friends' perspectives. In the field, I was given permission to learn and practice my skills differently, away from the expectations of pre-defined criteria. I became more proficient because learning was camouflaged by fun.
As an adult, I try to remember those experiences and replicate them whenever I can. I haven't been doing that so much lately, so now I'm getting intentional about it. I'm planning a series of monthly Writing Field Trips. They will be full-day excursions to entertaining places that will encourage my creative process in new ways. I'll have a loosely planned schedule, tight enough to immerse myself fully in the extraordinary writing experience each location offers but relaxed enough to allow me to chat with my friends... play, share a meal, and perhaps meet some new people and become exposed to different writing techniques.
Would you like to come along? I think it would be fun if you did. As they say, the more, the merrier!
When I've taken Writing Field Trips in the past, I found that long-hand writing in a notebook is best due to the unpredictability of access to electricity and the possibility of moments of inclement weather. However, if you want to join me and have a device with a long battery life or an alternate portable power supply, and a super-speedy satchel of protection, you're more than welcome to bring your device. Who am I to tell you how to write?
However, I do recommend you come prepared to plop down on the grass, floor, or a bench as you write. I find that changing my body posture while in a creative atmosphere can dramatically impact the words I write. Sometimes, depending on the destination, I bring along a light, easy-to-carry cushion or chair.
If you'd like to meet up and write with me, that would be tremendous! Financially, we'll be independent, but I'm open to carpooling if you live near me, or somewhere along the route. If you let me know ahead of time that you're planning to go, we can pre-arrange a meeting place and a gentle schedule for the day, just so we don't spend hours searching for each other, rather than writing.
If you have questions regarding particular rules and regulations (especially about things like service animal access, menus, social distancing restrictions, etc.) please visit the website listed for each venue to find those specific details, and buy tickets, if necessary. If I am going to reschedule or cancel for any reason (assuming anyone wants to go along), I'll be sure to send you an email and let you know. If the weather is actively icky at any of the planned outdoor locations at 8:00 AM the morning of the trip, you can confidently make the assumption that I won't be going, and consider that trip cancelled.
I look forward to Writing with you Out In The Field! We're going to have a good time!
