For a different creative slant on the police procedural... take one part legacy mortician, one part old-friend-detective, and one part mystery author. Mix thoroughly, add in a sprinkle of jealousy, a serial killer, and too many secrets... and you've got a recipe for a fast-paced, entertaining read.
I love a good mystery, and I'm an even greater fan of books that involve books, libraries, and authors in some capacity that is relevant to the plot. This one delivers with humor, intensity, a romance that feels real, and so many twists that I was kept off-balance through the entire story. That's a good thing. The last thing mystery readers want is to figure it out before the characters do. I loved the snark, the tiny undertaker details that sometimes set my bloodhound nose in the wrong direction, and the heroine's personal historical Easter eggs that had me guessing at every new chapter. I've come to expect that in mystery novels these days, but Ms. Hart achieves her goals with the same skill as all the great mystery authors. This story is anything but predictable.
This is the first in an 18-book series. Admittedly, it'll take me a while to get through them all, but it'll be an adventure I know I'll enjoy. 😊
