I've read Ms. Feeney before and was captivated by her ability to twist the psychology of crime, expectation, and horror into a fancy braid of reluctant reality.
This is the story of a group of friends who were not always the best to each other growing up, and how someone, or perhaps several someones, reach their breaking point, seeking revenge several years later. Ms. Feeney's strongest talent lies in mis-direction and the ability to invoke emotion just when you thought logic was your only way out.
I enjoyed the juxtaposition of a reporter and police detective in this story. Two sides of the same coin, and both searching for answers. It's interesting to me how both investigate and both find possible solutions... and still, no one is really sure they've got it right until the end comes crashing in on the last few pages. And no one is more surprised than the two of them (except me)!
Ms. Feeney's writing style keeps me riveted, and refuses to take it easy on me... and with a psychological thriller that also infuses several smoke rings of the paranormal into the mix, it's exactly what I want.
I have a few more of Ms. Feeney's titles on my TBR, and I look forward to discovering what surprises she drops into my imagination next.
