As horror books go, this one was pretty creepy. A dark forest, shadowy photographs recovered from the camera of a lost college student, and her tribe of friends who go on a mission to find her... and encounter more than they could have ever expected.
While it wasn't Saw gruesome, there were some graphic moments that made my stomach churl. The acumen this author holds when describing decomposition is remarkably vivid, involving my nose in the story in a way I hadn't expected.
Although it wasn't Pet Cemetery scary, there were a number of pages when I was looking over my shoulder and reaching to turn on another light. Once the author insinuates that you're being watched... and followed... and does it with skill, it's a difficult feeling to shake.
Best in this horror story, is that I could not predict the ending, and was pleasantly surprised with how the author got me to that point. It was a satisfying ending... leaving just enough to the imagination that the creepy feeling lingered a few days after the last page.
I listened to this story on audiobook, and the narrator, Angela Dawe, provides additional tension to the pages. Her voice is tentative and worrisome in all the right places, and properly informative and stunned in others. I was immediately sucked into the story and found it a challenge to put it down, because of both the writing and the reading. These two creatives are well paired.
