The story addresses the social issue of hand-holding and the fear of running toward the water. This is shown through certain adaptations made for Emma's comfort, such as holding hands loosely. Also, Harper and Jerry use her special cards to communicate and ensure her safety, showing empathy and understanding of her needs.
The story emphasizes the importance of patience and adaptability in friendships, especially when one friend has special needs.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Lisa Jacovsky is a Psychology professor at Union College of New Jersey and SNHU.
