If you enjoy steampunk fantasies, this book is a fantastic read. If you haven't discovered the genre yet, this would be a spectacular place to start.
Set in an alternate Victorian world, time is the most important component of life. Time controls everything, which makes the clock towers vitally important. If one becomes damaged it can stop time and trap the town, making it impossible for anyone to leave... or age. In this world, a clock mechanic is as important as neurosurgeons are today. Without them, people would lose... everything.
This is the first in what promises to be a thrilling ride through a trilogy filled with starts and stops that make you listen for your own heartbeat as you consider those people and things... and moments... that are most important to you.
The vitality the author brings to this story is mesmerizing. I felt that I could hear each tick of the clock - and at times, the absence of it - as I read, holding my breath as these characters made choices they weren't always confident would work.
I found this book to be a stunning escape, and a wonderful way to wind down (see what I did there?) after a long day of tediousness. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this trilogy. This author's storytelling style is compelling and captivating, strong in detail and long in the pregnant pauses found between seconds of adventure.
